Global Systems Laboratory

The Global Systems Laboratory (GSL) is one of ten National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Research laboratories and is located in Boulder, Colorado. The research improves environmental prediction models, develops state-of-the-science decision support tools and visualization systems, and uses high-performance computing technology to support a Weather-Ready Nation.

Atmospheric aerosols in wildfire smoke and air pollution cause respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases that result in an estimated 4.2 million deaths each year worldwide. The transportation industry also benefits from GSL’s research with better forecasts of the impact of wildfire smoke on visibility.
