Oregon Department of Forestry Fire Protection Program recommendations include:
Establish a “defensible space” by removing brush and other fire fuels near the house. For example, within a 30-foot perimeter around the house, dry grass should be cut to a height of less than four inches; cut grass, leaves and twigs should be dispersed; shrubs and trees should be free of dead limbs and leaves; and lower tree limbs should be removed to prevent fires from “climbing” into treetops.
